Bellinzona
Visit the capital of the Italian speaking Ticino region and UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. This medieval city is just half an hour away by train from Locarno and Lugano, and well worth a visit. Bellinzona is rich in historical and cultural heritage, and was afforded much importance due to its unique geographical position, which allowed it to act as a gateway to the Alps from the south, and equally as a gateway to Italy from the north. This gave rise to its three medieval castles, Castelgrande, Castello Montebello and Castello Sasso Corbaro, originally built to protect the city.
During your visit you must visit one of the many typically Ticinese taverns, known as Grottos and Canvetti, serving truly local cuisine.
