Located on the northernmost end of Lake Maggiore, Locarno is a beautiful waterfront old town dominated by a vine-clad hillside and has the mildest climate in Switzerland. Its cultural past is evident in the pictuesque old town, the Città Vecchia, with narrow streets and passageways that descend to the Piazza Grande The area has some great walking and fantastic excursions to fascinate and inspire. There is also a strong festival spirit, with entertainment and evening concerts running throughout the summer months, the highpoint of which is the International Film Festival in August.

Locarno has a great many activities on offer. After taking the time to explore the town itself, visitors can make the most of the opportunities presented by the surrounding area.
A cruise on the lake is a great way to see the area, and there are a number of Lidos where you can cool off with quick dip.
Trains run to the dramatic Centovalli, an area of great natural beauty, with its gorges and waterfalls. You can take a walk in the shady forests or visit the picturesque villages,
Just half an hour away by train, is medieval Bellinzona, the capital of the Ticino region, and a UNESCO world heritage site.
