Lake Constance - Konstanz Resort Guide

Resort Information

Lake Constance (known locally as Bodensee) is the third largest lake in Europe and is a popular holiday destination. It is bordered by Germany, Switzerland and Austria so you can have a truly international holiday! The lake's main source of water is the River Rhine, to the west of the lake the cascade of the Rhine Falls is a spectacular sight to see. Our hotels are located in the lakeside town of Konstanz, right on the German/Swiss border. Konstanz is an ideal base from which to explore the area whether by bike or train, on foot or on one of the many boat services to other towns, villages and islands on the lake.

Walking

The walk around the lake is 275km long and would take you about 2 weeks but you can enjoy sections of the walk using the lake's ferries to get to and from each bit. The path runs beside the lake and other parts take you higher to enjoy the views from above. The island of Mainau can only be visited on foot (the bus from Konstanz will drop you at the lakeside and you walk onto the island across a short causeway). If you take the boat to Bregenz, there is a cable-car up onto the Pfänder mountain in Austria, from which there are some lovely mountain walks. All Crystal customers receive a FREE walking map (Kompass WK 1c 1:75K)†.
